Common Name:

Tells: Yellow pores DNS or bruise blue-greenish & can be huge, esp. by the stem. Oft-velvety, brownish (tawny-, red-, pale yellow-, to orange-) cap may crack w/age.

Other Information: Yellowish cap flesh DNS or may blue slightly. Yellow to buff-tawny stem is yellow on top & often at the base, & may have brownish powder-dots over the midsection. Likes oaks but not exclusively. Will grow on decaying trunks too.

Science Notes: DNA testing of identified samples moved this mushroom into the newly erected genus “Xerocomus,” but/and knowledgeable experts from the region suggest that both this species and Xerocomus hemixanthus should be merged with/into Boletus ochraceoluteus – which may well belong in either Xerocomus or Xerocomellus.

Edibility: Unknown.

CHEMICAL TESTS:

NH4OH (Ammonia): Cap skin turns blue-green. Cap flesh turns blue to bluish.
KOH: Cap skin turns blue-green.
FeSO4 (Iron Salts): No data.
