Common Name:

Tells: Dark wine-red cap cracks w/age. Red pores dull w/age & quickly blue. Red-netted, cap-colored stem (often yellow by pores) bruises blue.

Other Information: Yellow cap flesh quickly blues. Stem has dark red netting on at least the upper portion. Likes leafy trees. Hard to distinguish from the other red-pored blue-stainers.

Science Notes: Boletes of Eastern North America has merged this mushroom into Boletus flammans, but some authorities think the debate is still open.

Edibility: Avoid. Known to be a sick-maker.
