Common Name:
Tells: Viscid & almost-corrugated cap is a shade of brown (red-, orange-, yellow- or plain). Stem often long & curved. Flesh often stains pinkish red.
Other Information: B. viscidocorrugis & B. longicurvipes were considered two species prior to DNA testing, with the only difference being whether the flesh stained. They’re now considered to be the same species with the staining an in-species variation. The superseded Latin name helps with the ID: ‘viscido’ and ‘corrugis’ being two main tells about the cap.
Science Notes: DNA testing moved this mushroom from Boletus to Leccinum, and combined the two lookalikes f/k/a B. longicurvipes and B. viscidocorrugis.
Edibility: Good.
CHEMICAL TESTS:
- NH4OH (Ammonia): Cap skin flashes cherry-red & then quickly fades to dull red. Cap flesh turns yellow.
- KOH: Cap skin turns cherry- or bright-red. Cap flesh turns bright yellow.
- FeSO4 (Iron Salts): No data.
