Description

Genus: Boletus

Species: roodyi

Common Name: “Roody’s Bolete”

Tells: Blood/pink/purple-red cap flattens & often cracks w/age. Stem yellow above, red below w/ no netting. Pale yellow flesh may slowly redden & is yellower in bug holes.

Other Information: Smells like vanilla when dried. Yellow pores age toward olive & DNS. Flesh has a thin red line by the cap skin & can taste mildly astringent. Full scientific description available here.

CHEMICAL TESTS:

NH4OH (Ammonia): Cap skin displays a slate-blue flash that quickly changes to yellow ocher. Stem skin turns dingy amber. Dried cap skin turns dark red before bleaching to very pale pink.
KOH: Cap skin displays a slate-blue flash that quickly changes to yellow ocher. Stem skin turns dingy amber. Cap flesh turns pale bluish. Tubes turn bluish green before fading to a lighter shade.
FeSO4 (Iron Salts): No data.
