Common Name:

Tells: Small, hairy/scaly, variable-color cap has an incurved edge, bruises dark gray & flattens w/age. Almost-veined, radial yellow pores age browner & DNS or stain brownish.

Other Information: Cap flesh yellow to pinkish buff while stem flesh is bright yellow, darkening toward orange low down. Both may bruise reddish. A small mushroom <2½ inches across. Ringed stem often has fine hairs (no dots or smears) & is often curved at the bottom. Likes pines & oak/pine mix.

Edibility: Good.

CHEMICAL TESTS:

  • NH4OH (Ammonia): Cap skin turns pinkish gray. Flesh turns pinkish or pale raspberry.
  • KOH: Cap skin turns pale to greenish gray. Flesh turns blue gray.
  • FeSO4 (Iron Salts): Cap skin slowly turns gray. Flesh slowly turns pale gray.
