Boletus auripes (“Butter Foot Bolete”)

Golden yellow or yellow-with-brown stem has yellow netting. Nothing stains. Yellow pores darken w/ age. Dense texture w/ shallow pores.

Common Name: “Butter Foot Bolete”

Tells: Golden yellow or yellow-with-brown stem has yellow netting. Nothing stains. Yellow pores darken w/ age. Dense texture w/ shallow pores.

Other Information: An attractive find.

Edibility: Choice.

Science Notes: Everyone knows this isn’t a true Boletus, but much debate exists about where it will end up. The most likely suggestion at this point is Tengioboletus, which is otherwise confined to species from east Asia. Remember how Baorangia bicolor has an odd occurrence in east Asia and eastern North America? The same thing may be going on with this species.

CHEMICAL TESTS:

  • NH4OH (Ammonia): Cap surface turns yellow. Cap flesh turns a more intense yellow.
  • KOH: Cap surface turns deep yellow. Cap flesh turns a more intense yellow.
  • FeSO4 (Iron Salts): Cap surface does not change. Cap flesh turns a more intense yellow.
