Tells: Deep red (mahogany colored) cap. Yellow flesh quickly blues before fading to red. Very shallow tubes. Yellow pores age greenish then brownish, and bruise blue.

Other Information: Stem is yellow high, becoming red low, bruises blue when handled, and gets thinner going up. Cap margin has a light colored edge that maintains a curl until fully mature, and will bruise blue. Extremely rare, and so far found only in Mississippi under both oak and pine.

Science Notes: Species was first erected in 2000.

  • NH4OH (Ammonia): Cap skin turns yellowish. Flesh stains orange.
  • KOH: No data.
  • FeSO4 (Iron Salts): No data.
