Common Name:

Tells: Rich (fox-red, cinnamon, or dull) brown cap bruises blue-black & may crack w/age. Yellow stem w/red tints ages olive-brown from base up, & bruises blue-black.

Other Information: Yellow to greenish-yellow pores age toward olive-yellow, & quickly bruise blue. Yellow cap flesh blues, but sometimes slowly. Stem flesh gets reddish brown in the base and bug holes. Likes oak & pine, & may grow on stumps.

Edibility: Said to be good, but unconfirmed

CHEMICAL TESTS:

  • NH4OH (Ammonia): Cap surface does not react.
  • KOH: No data.
  • FeSO4 (Iron Salts): Cap flesh turns dull greenish.
