Common Name:

Tells: Yellow, brown-staining pores w/in a yellow-brown membrane. Stem flesh yellow at the top, darkening through orange into brownish at the bottom.

Other Information: Yellowish white cap flesh DNS. Brownish stem may have a white-buff band by the cap. Irregularly shaped, dingy yellow cap, often w/red-brown spots & streaks. Only known from Western NY, where it grows under larch & pine. An equivalent mushroom called Gastrosuillus suilloides is found only in the high Sierra Nevadas.

Edibility: Unknown.

Science Notes: This odd species seems to be a mutation from Suillus grevillei.

  • NH4OH (Ammonia): Cap skin turns dark red. Cap flesh turns rose-red.
  • KOH: No data.
  • FeSO4 (Iron Salts): No data.
