Description

Genus: Lanmaoa

Species: carbonilivor (nom. prov.)

Common Name:

Tells: Strong bouillon/curry odor. Flesh (yellow by skin, paler within) quickly bruises blue, fading to charcoal. Deep red cap fades toward brown w/age, & bruises dark.

Other Information: A rare species compared to other Lanmaoa. Likes oak and hemlock, most often mixed forest with both. Bright yellow pores w/occasional orange tones quickly bruise blue. Deep “Morocco-red cap” is can be mottled with yellow, and bruises dark blue before fading to charcoal. Yellow stem with streaks or patches of red also bruises readily, & usually pinches down at the base. White mycelium. All specimens found to date have been on the small side, with caps no more than 2-1/2″ in diameter (6-7 cm) and stems about the same. Only a few finds have been confirmed, all from New Jersey plus one from Wisconsin. Expect a range in between those extremes.

Science Notes: Professor Colin Domnauer has established the separate existence of this species by whole genome testing in addition to the distinctive ITS gene identified by Igor Safonov and Linas Kudzma which was described at Mushroom Observer. So there is no doubt at that level.

Edibility: Unknown, but probably good given the genus.

CHEMICAL TESTS:

  • NH4OH (Ammonia): Cap skin turns muddy yellow to greenish amber yellow.
  • KOH: Cap skin turns dark mahogany brown to cherry red. Flesh turns orangish-brown after the blueing fades.
  • FeSO4 (Iron Salts): No data.
