Common Name:

Tells: White pores age pinkish & stain brown. A small but solid bolete that likes roadsides & mossy ground by tree stumps. Whitish cap flesh slowly browns & often tastes bitter.

Other Information: Yellow-brown cap (sometimes dark brown) fades toward yellow-tan & can crack or fissure. Cap-colored (but paler) stem may rarely have fine netting.

Edibility: Bitter, though sometimes slowly.

CHEMICAL TESTS:

  • NH4OH (Ammonia): Cap skin turns orange. Cap flesh has no reaction.
  • KOH: Cap skin turns orange. Cap flesh has no reaction.
  • FeSO4 (Iron Salts): Cap skin turns olive green. Cap flesh turns bluish gray.
