Boletus mahogonicoloroides

Mahogany (or a bit redder) cap lightens & may stain blue at edge. Yellow cap flesh stains blue, resolving to pale red-brown. Yellowish pores bruise blue-black.

Common Name: “Mahogany Colored Bolete”

Tells: Mahogany (or a bit redder) cap lightens & may stain blue at edge. Yellow cap flesh stains blue, resolving to pale red-brown. Yellowish pores bruise blue-black.

Other Information: Blue-bruising stem is bright yellow near pores & redder by base. Pores start yellow but age to greenish- & then brownish-yellow. Only known from Mississippi.

Science Notes: This will probably end up in Neoboletus, but testing and publication will be required to accomplish that.

Edibility: Unknown.

CHEMICAL TESTS:

  • NH4OH (Ammonia): Cap surface turns yellow. Cap flesh turns pale orange. Pore surface turns pale reddish brown.
  • KOH: Cap surface darkens. Cap flesh turns pale brownish orange. Pore surface turns burnt orange.
  • FeSO4 (Iron Salts): Cap and pore surfaces have no reaction. Cap flesh turns grayish.
